I've nearly finished my project but have a few. World war one salonika tour | war in the birdcage. The scanned file is quite large as its in hi res. The municipality of thessaloniki, the historical center, had a population of 325,182 in 2011, while the thessaloniki metropolitan area had 1,030,338 inhabitants in 2011.
After withdrawing from serbia in november 1915, allied forces took up defensive positions around salonika, assuming that bulgarian forces would try and advance into greece.
It was eventually agreed to land forces at the vital port of salonika (now thessaloniki) in the northern greek region of macedonia. The expected invasion never took place.
