Genesis 27:28,29 therefore god give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:. He replied, “jacob.” 28 “your name will no longer be jacob,” the man told him.

While preparing in fear to meet his brother esau, jacob finds himself grappling with an unknown stranger in the dark. For as a prince hast thou power with god and with men, and hast prevailed. 27 so he asked him, “what is your name?” and he said, “jacob.” 28 and he said, “your name shall no longer be jacob, but [] israel; Jacob sees angels—he asks god to preserve him from esau, for whom he prepares presents—he wrestles all night with a messenger of god—jacob’s name is changed to israel—he sees god face to face.

27 the man asked him, “what is your name?” “jacob,” he answered.

He said, thy name shall be called no more jacob — or, as the words should rather be rendered, shall not only be called jacob, but israel, or israel rather than jacob, a man prevailing with god, rather than a supplanter.
