Its not as good as their classic Hal Roach films of the 1930s but still an affable interesting misfire worthy of a visit. Much of its poor reputation comes from Laurels sickly appearance decades of heavily edited and. Atoll K presents a mature version of the Stan and Ollie we originally met in 1928. Not the broad white-faced clowns of the later Roach films.
Not the stodgy dullards of the FoxMGM years.
Perhaps thats why I like Atoll K so much. Not because of what the film contains but what it promises. A strange international co-production featuring the pair alongside a cast of French and Italian actors Atoll K is unlike any of the duos more famous films from the 20s and 30s. Say the words Atoll K to most Laurel and Hardy fans and they will cringe.
The 1951 film produced in France was the last screen appearance of the beloved comedy team and to many fans it was one of their very worst endeavors.
The pairs last screen appearance was in a FrenchItalian production Atoll K 1950 reissued as Utopia. After that they continued to work in music halls because neither was well-off financially. Hardy made a solo appearance in John Waynes The Fighting Kentuckian 1949. Laurel never became a US.
