Different stitches can help give a basic quilt block a new look. Machine embroidery appliqué with the E-stitch or as it is better known the blanket stitch is one of the most challenging methods of machine appliqué because its an open stitch. Here are some of my favorites.

For several years I taught a class on Sewing Machine Applique at Sew Much More in Austin.
In three hours I touched on the basics of sewing machine applique. In the class we did samplers of straight stitch applique zigzag applique fussy cut applique reverse applique and decorative stitch applique. Set your machine for a zigzag stitch with a width between 1 and 15mm or about 18 wide. Set the stitch length just above not at the satin-stitch setting or between5 and 1mm.
If possible set your machine in the needle down position and set the motor at half speed.
The most common stitches used with fusible applique are the zig zag stitch satin or narrow the blanket stitch and a straight stitch. The first thing we are going to do today is play with our machines and make a little stitch sampler card that we can use as a reference tool for future projects. It will look something like this. You must choose whether or not to match the thread to the fabric in the appliqué piece.
If youre not too confident at appliqué then matching the thread is a good option as any wobbles will be less obvious. The zigzag or satin stitch and buttonhole or blanket stitch are the most common machine applique. A satin stitch comprises thick zigzag stitching that you sew closely together. Firstly to form a blanket stitch make a straight stitch along the appliques outer edge.
Then make a perpendicular stitch following the shape of the applique.
An applique is basically a fabric design sewn onto another fabric base. You can leave the applique with sewn edges or you can use an embroidery machine to finish the edges with a satin stitch A satin stitch can best be described as a filling stitch. The thread is stitched right next to one another. When the tack-down stitch is done remove the hoop from the machine.
Now you will need appliqué scissors to trim the excess fabric as close to the tack-down stitch as possible without snipping it.
Once the fabric is trimmed place hoop back on machine and do the final step which is the zigzag or satin stitch. The blanket stitch is very often used for machine applique and provides a totally different look from the satin stitch. Satin Stitch Appliqué The final method is a zigzag stitch sewn very close together this is referred to as the satin stitch. Some sewing machines will have a satin stitch setting others will require you to use the standard 2 step zigzag.
