I decided to replace the 24 shift registers, 192 transistors and 640 resistors with 12 dm13a led drivers (about $1 us each on ebay). I have build an common anode rgb led cube that i had seen on youtube posted by kevin darrah. 12 x dm13a led drivers surround the cube.

I wish i would have went a little bigger. The schematic for the control board may look complicated but is actually relatively simple.
Around 4 years later and after a prototype 4x4x4 rgb led cube it was finished!
