I wouldn't shoot it out past 150 yards. Hands down would be the 338. I own a marlin 1895 45/70, it's a good brush gun period. Designed in 1873, this round was meant for use by the us army with their springfield rifles during and after the american civil war.
With the 300 mag your just pushing the 30/06 bullet a little faster.
You can even find a few +p loads. The.45/70s power comes from mass not speed. The.444 shoots much flatter than most folks realize. Those huge long cartridges are interesting looking and kinda calling to me.
