The 44 magnums were first introduced in 1955 by smith & wesson to improve their model 29 revolver, which had been chambered for.44 special cartridges since 1934. I have a cva single shot in 44 mag and it is one of my favorite rounds for whitetail hunting under 150 yards. To me this adds up to greater knock down power out to 50 yds anyway.
The best all around caliber and cartridge for leverguns
I own a marlin 1895 45/70, it's a good brush gun period.
To me they are totally different guns and you need to decide what you want to do with them.
45/70 vs 300 win mag! The marlin 1894 in 44 mag that i’ve owned simply don’t have the correct bore diameter or twist. What i really want though is a marlin 1894 pre. I have two.444's and a.450.
With the 338, you push heavier bullets a little faster than the '06 giving you more energy and knockdown power.
The 45/70 hand loaded for a ruger #1 is one mean rifle, so is the marlin 45/70 just don't expect it to run a hot load your ruer likes. And the.44 has a wider meplate for added shocking power. There is a lot of nostalgia with the 45/70 but if you start looking at how much powder it takes to perform it is rather inefficient and yes there is significantly more recoil. I enjoy the marlin 336 30/30 but like the 357 magnum more.
The 44 is more efficient and lot quieter than the 45/70.
Any deer i have shot in brush country has been well under 50 yds. To put this into perspective, a boeing 737 commercial airliner travels at a cruising speed of 600 mph, or 880 fps. The.444 marlin has the advantage of using the jacketed and cast bullets for the.44 magnum, making it a rather flexible. A lighter 8,3 pound marlin/scope 1895 pushing a 325g ftx bullet to 2150fps generates about 32 ft.
The 300 winchester magnum is a heavy hitter with t.
Hands down would be the 338. Never been able to get one to shoot good. Close in a 44 mag is usually higher energy and with hard cast are good for dangerous game. The.44 mag is driving a 180 gr at 2250.
I wouldn't shoot it out past 150 yards.
The.444 shoots much flatter than most folks realize. With the 300 mag your just pushing the 30/06 bullet a little faster. So i bought a 1894 cpc in 357 mag. We go head to head with these monster cartridges , to see who is crowned the victor!
A typical factory load for the.30/30 has a 170 gr bullet going 2150.
